1. Take the Stairs
Ueda says, “I just saw a sign near the elevator reminding people to take the stairs.”
Use the stairs to go up or down. Likewise, we take the elevator or take the escalator.
‘I took the stairs all the way to my office once, all the way to the fourteenth floor.’ Or ‘We shouldn’t take the escalator with a stroller.’
2. Be Big On
Grace says, “Paul Pearson is big on the idea of using stairs, which he calls ‘stationary medication’.”
To be big on something is to treat it as something important or be enthusiastic about it.
Such as ‘Company X is very big on company service. They do everything they can to keep the customers happy.’ Or, ‘She’s very big on baseball; watches games all the time, knows all about the players.’
3. Stationary Medication
Here’s one that native speakers often misspell.
Stationary with an ‘a’ at the end, means remain in one place, like a stationary bike at a gym.
But stationery with an ‘e’ is taking about pens and paper, staplers – things you use in an office. So you have a stationery store, or stationery supplies.
4. Be in Great Shape
Grace says, “He appears to be in great shape.”
Strong, robust, in very good condition.
And this can also be used about things, like ‘Her speech is in great shape. It’s very interesting and she’s been practicing a lot.’ Or ‘The office is not in great shape right now. Our furniture is old and the carpets are worn down.’
5. Get the Idea from…
Wu says, “Paul says he got the idea for the elevator sign from the previous mayor of New York.”
Get the idea from – something inspires an idea. It suggests an idea or leads us to think of it.
‘The founder of a famous US coffee-shop-chain got the idea from Italian coffee shops.’ Or ‘She got the idea to start her own business from her husband.’
If someone or something is in shape, or in good shape, they are in a good state of health or in a good condition. If they are in bad shape, they are in a bad state of health or in a bad condition. ⇒ …the Fatburner Diet Book, a comprehensive guide to getting in shape. ⇒ He was still in better shape than many young men.
